Hiring trends to take note of if you’re studying in the UK in 2024

The start of a new year often brings thoughts of new beginnings, and with it, new methods and tools are often introduced to adapt to the changing landscape. Recruitment is no different, each year there are new techniques taken on by employers that update and change the way they recruit for new roles. So, if you’re currently studying in the UK, we’ve looked at some of the key recruitment trends for 2024 to help you navigate the job market when looking for your graduate role.

AI

Starting with the trend that has been most talked about recently, from ChatGPT to automated robots, AI has dominated 2023 and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere in 2024. In fact, as more companies learn how to use and incorporate it into their day-to-day practice, we’re likely to need to understand how it’s being used. For employers, automated services are a way to reduce the time taken in initial searches and applications when looking for new candidates. What that means, is that you need to be aware of what they may be looking for. So, when writing your resume or application form, be conscious of keywords, skills and include these so they highlight your compatibility for the role.

Remote hiring

Remote hiring is a trend that seems to be here to stay in most industries. Employers have adapted over the last few years to use remote working and practices to their advantage. This means being prepared for online interviews and remote working. Try to use this to your advantage and think about roles that may be just outside the city you live (but still commutable) to open up the areas you can look for graduate jobs. If a role requires you to be in the office for part of the week this would add flexibility to the location of your job. When applying for remote or flexible roles, try to demonstrate how your skills and solo working practices match you to the job requirements.

Skills based hiring

There has been a shift in what employers are looking for from new candidates and an increase in the importance of skills over other attributes. Tangible examples of how you could manage the role are key to success. So, to meet this demand, try to find work experience or opportunities while studying that will increase your experience in areas key to your industry. Speak to your careers team about internships, volunteering opportunities, anything that will provide you with additional skills you can use to display your talent to your future employer.
