Canada is known for having a resource-based economy, but looking at the country’s most in-demand jobs, you wouldn’t know it.

 

In fact, Canada looks like a lot like a service economy. Which makes sense, because that′s what Canada′s economy is really about. Three-quarters of working Canadians are employed in services.

 

So it makes sense, then, that cooks were the most in-demand workers in Canada in 2014, according to data compiled by job search site Workopolis, followed by sales reps.

 

 

But those aren’t the jobs seeing the biggest increases in demand; those jobs are more technical in nature. Demand for specialist physicians jumped 161 per cent in 2014, Workopolis reports, while demand for economists soared 151 per cent. Really, economists?

 

At the other end are the jobs seeing the biggest declines in demand. That crown belongs to recreation/sports program directors; demand for these jobs dropped 17 per cent in 2014.

 

The second-biggest decline was for underground mine workers — perhaps a reflection of the recent hard times in the mining industry.
