Samsung job posting hints at company′s plan to bring Samsung Pay to Canada

Samsung Canada is hiring software engineers in Vancouver to assist in the development of cloud infrastructure for Samsung Pay, the company’s mobile payments solution.

The Canadian arm of the South Korean multinational published two new job postings related to Samsung Pay to its corporate website on Thanksgiving Monday.

“The Enterprise Services Platform & Infrastructure business unit is looking for a Lead Dev/Ops Engineer who is eager to work with on leading edge, global projects built on top of Amazon AWS and MS Azure building the global cloud infrastructure for Samsung Pay,” says one of the postings. “As you’d expect, the latest technologies are used, and you’ll have the opportunity to work on projects that operate on a truly global scale. We are looking for someone who lives and breathes “Infrastructure as code” and if it needs to be done twice, automate.”

It’s important to note that this is not an explicit confirmation that Samsung Pay is coming to Canada. The postings specifically state that the company is looking for help building out Samsung Pay’s “global” cloud infrastructure.

In fact, Samsung’s interest in hiring Canadian engineers may have nothing to do with a domestic launch. Many multi-national companies open satellite offices in Canada to take advantage of the relative low cost of hiring Canadian engineering talent. On average, Canadian software developers are paid noticeably less than their peers in the United States. Moreover, they usually stay with the same company for significantly more time.

For Samsung, hiring Canadian talent may just be good business sense.
