WSP is currently seeking an Urban Planner to join our Planning, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design studio, located in our Calgary office.  Reporting to the Manager, this Urban Planner will be responsible for assisting senior staff with various community and urban planning tasks including, but not limited to, research and development of municipal development plans, zoning bylaws, policy documents, area and neighbourhood structure plans, and application/processing of various regulatory approvals.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform professional work related to a variety of planning assignments;
  • Undertake research and analysis of various scenarios and formal presentation of analysis;
  • Provide professional planning consulting services to the land development industry, including client advice and regulatory approvals;
  • Planning policy and zoning interpretation/administration for municipal and land development clients;
  • Administer permitting/development applications under the guidance of senior planners;
  • Research and develop policies for municipal development plans, area redevelopment plans, area/neighbourhood structure plans;
  • Act as a liaison between clients and approving authorities;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with provincial government agencies, municipalities, private developers, special interest groups, organizations and institutions;
  • Conduct research and prepare various technical background to support various long range planning projects;
  • Skills to speak to a diverse range of audiences from the general public to various community/business groups;
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and other business development activities; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Community Planning, Urban Planning, and / or related field;
  • A Full membership (RPP), or eligibility, of the Alberta Professional Planners Institute;
  • Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible urban planning experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience, preferably in the private sector setting;


Job Skills/Competencies Required

  • Aptitude and ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience in land development planning would be considered an asset;
  • Extensive analytical, creative, decision-making and strategic skills and a proven ability to reach sound decisions and to resolve complex challenges;
  • Demonstrated public engagement experience – IAP2 training would be considered an asset;
  • Project and business development experience will set you apart from your peer group;
  • Excellent time-management skills;
