Rainy River Mine

Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
 
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario  The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. Position Reports To: Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Position Overview

The Underground Geotechnical Engineer - EIT is a key member of the Rainy River Mine Geotechnical Team and will report to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer who will coordinate tasks in the office and in the field. The successful applicant will work at the Rainy River Underground Mine site.

The position will primarily provide geotechnical / ground control support to the Rainy River Underground Mine Technical Services team to execute the Ground Control Management Plan. The Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for all aspects of ground control and providing ground support recommendations conforming with the Ontario OH&S Act Regulation 854 – Mines and Mining Plants, and other relevant legislation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and oversee the execution of all aspects related to ground control for the Rainy River Underground Mine.
  • Ensure the Ground Control Management Plan remains current and is updated regularly with design revisions and background analysis to support ground support packages.
  • Conduct inspections and implement instrumentation, surveillance, and monitoring systems to align with Quality Control program and Ground Control Management Plan.
  • Carry out numerical modelling and stope stability analysis for underground excavations.
  • Incorporate rock mass characterization and structural geology data into design and interpretation of stability analysis.
  • Stay updated on current state of practice for underground geotechnical design and technologies.
  • Communicate design basis and intent effectively to all levels of the organization.
  • Perform quality control duties in accordance with the policies and procedures.
  • Complete technical review of internal mine designs and deliverables from external consultants.
  • Promote Health and Safety by participating in daily and weekly meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geological, Mining, Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering, or related field.
  • Master’s degree is considered beneficial.
  • Registered, or able to be registered with the PEO as an EIT, or eligible for immediate registration.
  • 1-3 years of experience in rock mechanics and ground support design is preferred. Co-op terms in geotechnical engineering will be considered as relevant experience.
  • Experience at operating underground mines is preferred, experience at a long-hole stoping operation is beneficial.
  • Experience with rock classification systems (RMR, Q’, GSI) and mapping.
  • Experience with 2D and 3D geotechnical numerical modelling (i.e. RocScience products, Map3D) and mine planning software (i.e. Deswik).
  • Experience with other geotechnical numerical modelling software (RocScience or Geostudio) and geological modelling software (Leapfrog).
  • Ability to install geotechnical instrumentation, complete quality control, and interpret instrumentation data is preferred.
  • A valid Ontario class G Class driver’s license (or equivalent Canadian driver’s license) with a clean driving abstract.
