New Afton Mine

Situated 10 kilometers west of picturesque Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. The area provides the opportunity to live and work in a vibrant community with its own university and within easy reach of world class ski resorts, championship golf courses, mountain biking trails, popular recreational lakes, and award-winning vineyards.

About the Role

Schedule: 7x7, Days only.

Position Reports To: Senior Mine Geologist

Position Overview: 

As an integral part of New Afton’s technical services team, the Geotechnical Engineer-In-Training is responsible for geotechnical and geological mapping of all underground development headings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct geotechnical and geological mapping of all underground development.
  • Conduct rock mass assessments / stability assessments from mapping data.
  • Confirm / adjust ground support designs to suit the ground conditions.
  • Conduct / or use the data from laser scanning of all underground development for QA/QC purposes.
  • Collect & assess all ground support QA/QC data to ensure compliance with construction specifications and the Ground Control Management Plan.
  • Undertake testing and monitoring of the ground support systems installed during development.
  • Complete underground geotechnical routine inspections and audits.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geological, Geotechnical, Civil or Mine Engineering
  • Minimum 1 years’ experience as a Geotechnical Engineer.
  • Registered or immediately eligible to register with EGBC as an Engineer-In-Training.
  • Underground experience is preferred.

Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

  • Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
  • Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
  • Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements


A competitive salary, performance bonus plan and benefits will be provided.  This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant. 

Job Skills/Competencies Required

  • Experience with 3D mining software e.g., Vulcan, Deswik etc.
