Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
 
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario  The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About the Role

Schedule: 5/2, 4/3 – 9 hour days

Position Reports To: Senior Water Resource Engineer

As a member of the New Gold Rainy River Mine team, the Junior or Intermediate Environmental/Civil Engineer demonstrates commitment and compliance with company Health & Safety, Environment and Social Responsibility policies and procedures. The Environmental/Civil Engineer also takes action to ensure that unsafe practices or non-compliant behaviors do not occur.

The Environmental/Civil Engineer will support the Environment Department with compliance monitoring programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect river flow and water level data, develop rating curves, conduct flow analysis and maintain records and logs.
  • Coordinate hydrometric station maintenance.
  • Document field observations or readings, and or downloading data from various pieces of equipment in an outdoor setting in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assist on site water balance model development.
  • Assist on groundwater model development and updates.
  • Lead the preparation of internal and external reports.
  • Perform data analysis in EQuIS.
  • Conduct compliance sampling and monitoring (effluent, surface and ground water quality, ambient air quality, noise, water flow using stream gauging equipment, water levels, soil or vegetation samples when required).
  • Assist in developing or updating relevant Standard Operations Procedures (SOPs) and Plans that support site operations requirements incorporating regulatory and license conditions as needed.
  • Assist in environmental inspections and identify areas that may be or are out of compliance with permits/regulations.
  • Support environmental site contractors.
  • Use knowledge of environmental procedures, techniques and regulations to complete tasks.
  • Operate department equipment including snow machines, boats, ice augers, all terrain vehicles.
  • Participate and assist in field operation related tasks as needed
  • Support Quality Control for the Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Conduct inspections and audits related to quality control and quality assurance on disciplines found in the EMS.
  • Provide guidance and constructive feedback to all departments on their environmental management performance with a view to continual improvement.
  • Suport completion and submission of various Government Agency reports such as NPRI.

Qualifications

  • Degree in environmental or civil engineering or related discipline.
  • 3+ years demonstrated  environmental field experience working in a mine or industrial site

Job Skills/Competencies Required

  • Demonstrable experience with water and effluent monitoring, sampling and field level analytical techinques.
  • Handling and experience in the safe use of hand or power tools, including augers is an asset.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. 
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft office suite.
  • Knowledgeable user of EQuIS preferred.
  • Knowledgeable user of GoldSim is an asset.
  • Knowledge of EMS and NPRI an asset
  • Good understanding of mining and milling processes and their environmental effects.
  • Possess valid Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Able to hike several kilometers on uneven ground.
  • Ability and availability to work weekends and some holidays.
  • Self-starter who can anticipate needs and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication skills, both orally and written
