Rainy River Mine

Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.
 
The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario  The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About The Role

Position Reports To: Senior Engineer

Position Overview:

Rainy River is committed to developing its people by the implementation of an Engineer in Training (EIT) progression model. This model provides EIT's to be exposed to a variety of technical disciplines with a structured career progression.  Rainy River currently has a need for an EIT focused on Drill and Blast.

Key Responsibilities

EITs rotations through the 3 team positions which provide technical services to the Mine Operations.  The positions are as listed below:

  • Drill Blast
  • Short Term Planning
  • Dispatch

EIT rotations could be anywhere from 8-16 months but should be long enough so that a good grasp of knowledge and experience in the role is obtained.

EITs may be asked to take on projects and/or assist other EITs or provide coverage during holidays.

Roles

Drill and Blast

  • Design and issue drill blast packages as defined by the 3 monthly and weekly plans.
  • Maintain drill and blast records and monitor QA/QC
  • Prepare loading instructions and design the timing for blasting with nonel detonators or electronic detonators.
  • Work closely with D&B Supervisor, Short Range Planners, Geotechs and Mine Techs to ensure Drill Blast designs comply to Site Standards and SOPs
  • Under the direction of the Senior Engineer undertake Drill and Blast related project studies and investigations, monitoring, wall control blasting trials, electronic initiation designs, vibration, and other related projects.
  • Support project planning, budgeting and forecasting of required materials and supplies for the operations. This includes reporting on progress and analysis of key performance indicators
  • Weekly and monthly reconciliation of blast performance including the review of QA/QC data, fragmentation analysis and dilution/ore loss from blasting
  • Prepare, monitor, update production data associated with drilling and blasting activities
  • Review Q/A data, digging rates and blast videos to determine areas of further improvement
  • Issue blast notices, update blast billboard, and various day to day activities.

Short Term Planning

  • Work closely with mine operations to detail out the drilling/mining activities to ensure smooth operation and safely achieve targets.
  • Using MineSight software, schedule out in detail drilling priorities and blasting schedule, as well as preferred shovel placement, mining priorities and millfeed.
  • Work with maintenance planners to ensure the planned equipment maintenance is included in the plan.
  • Present and discuss the initial plan at the Pre-weekly meeting and the detailed Weekly meeting held both in person and on Teams.
  • Plan out the various dumping activities required on the main active rock stockpiles.
  • Work closely with Geotechnical engineers to maintain the integrity of the stockpiles while building within the required lift designs.
  • Using MineSight software to design haulage access and lift requirements and upload the designs into the Wenco (dozers).
  • Work closely with mine operations to ensure the safe and efficient dumping requirements are met for the week/month/year.
  • Buttress, road, and dewatering designs as required.
  • Present and discuss all design work to mine operations and other technical staff during weekly meetings.

Dispatch

  • Ensure the integrity of the data collected by the Fleet Management System (FMS) Wenco.
  • Troubleshoot Wenco equipment issues/networking problems.
  • Prepare and update operator performance tracking reports.
  • Maintain KPI reporting, shift reports, monthly reports and any other reports as required.
  • Work with dispatchers and mine operations to ensure the delay/status data is being recorded and used properly. 

Qualifications

  • 0-2 years’ experience in Mine Engineering with exposure to surface mining operations
  • Successful completion of a Mine Engineering bachelor’s degree Program
  • Eligible for professional registration with the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO)
  • Experience in using mining software including MineSight Atlas / MinePlan 3D is an asset
  • Must possess effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making abilities

Working Conditions: 

Combination of office and field work. Field work will be in the pit, on blast patterns, working in proximity of drills and emulsion bulk trucks.  Frequent exposure to standing and walking for long periods of time, including walking across uneven surfaces.  Exposure to inclement weather-related conditions such as cold, heat, rain, and snow.  Work involves highly repetitive tasks including lifting / carrying up to 50 lbs on uneven terrain.
