Job Description & Qualifications

The role covers Environmental, Health & Safety, Sustainability & Security for the Cape Town site, & further extends to EHS&S oversight for NJC, and other CMOs operating in South Africa Supply Chain for Commercial Business. The Cape Town site has some unique & complex operations requiring broad Health & Safety expertise across operational EHS, Industrial Hygiene, process & machinery safety, & Engineering project safety processes, combined with strong leadership skills to drive a step change in safety culture & performance. The individual will sit on the Cape Town SLT & will be jointly accountable for the overall operation of the site in addition to core functional duties. They are also expected to be an influential leader at a regional level (functionally), with the capacity to provide an additional layer of support for Africa or EMEA sites in supporting incident follow up, audits or programme roll out. In addition the role will support Supply Chain overall ambition of brand protection and distribution risks from a security perspective

Key Responsibilities:

  • As a member of the SA Supply Chain and Cape Town LT, input to & lead implementation of plans & programmes aligned to the site’s & region’s objectives.
  • Develop key strategies, set standards, coach, mentor & recruit key talent to manage a broad portfolio of risk at the Cape Town site & CMOs located in South Africa.
  • Create passion for, develop & lead ambitious environmental sustainability programmes that will place Cape Town Site at the forefront of environmental performance within the supply chain.
  • Ensure that EHS&S strategies & objectives are in place aligned to CH / EMEA’s strategy & the site’s priorities to drive EHS&S performance at the site.
  • Implement effective EHS oversight, management & improvement programmes at third parties such as NJC, ensuring that GSK’s interests & brands are properly protected.
  • Coach & mentor EHS, Operations & Engineering leaders / teams to properly assess risk & make balanced judgements that both protect employees & facilitate the effective operation of the business.
  • Put measures in place to develop the site’s expertise to both avoid & resolve serious issues associated with any aspect of safety, health & environmental risk / performance & security.
  • Use organisational problem solving to determining the most suitable risk management approaches to a broad range of issues / incidents which will require skills in negotiating & influencing, innovative thinking & a strong technical backbone.
  • Ensure competent & appropriate numbers of staff are available to cost effectively address EHS performance & compliance, hazard & risk management, environmental sustainability & site security, building & leveraging the full organisational / capability / capacity of the Cape Town site
  • Work with the global team to develop and implement security strategies for Supply Chain and Cape Town Site
  • Work with the Global Security and Brand Protection team to enforce and ensure that brand protection strategies to manage anticounterfeiting are being adhered to within the South Africa Supply chain

Requirements:

  • Qualification: Engineering Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (BSc preferred)
  • Occupational Health and Safety experience
  • Strong FMCG
  • GMR2 - advantageous
