Description

As a junior business developer for a private equity, my duties vary according to the projects/investments I am working on. Some of these projects are a release of a new AAA gaming studio and the development of a new generation console game, launch of a new logistics company and the management of a comic book studio and more.

In the gaming company, my duties include identifying new business opportunities in the gaming industry, conducting market research, and analysing trends to identify potential customers and revenue streams.Additionally, I collaborate with other departments such as marketing, design, and development to ensure that our game is going to meet customer needs and expectations. I also participate in industry events and conferences to network and promote our company's upcoming game and its innovations within. In contrast, I am also working for a different project of my company, a launch of a new logistics company in Los Angeles. My duties in this project include identifying new business opportunities in the logistics industry, analysing supply chain processes, developing cost-effective solutions, and unedifying potential suppliers. At the same time, I work with other departments such as operations and procurement to ensure that our logistics strategy is going to be efficient and effective, and to ensure that our future customers will receive their products on promised time. Lastly, once a week I monitor industry trends and regulatory changes to identify potential risks and opportunities.

What key advice would you give to current international students looking to start a career in the UK?

From my personal experience, international students looking to start a career in the UK, should focus on 4 key points, that should be taken under consideration since their early enrolment in the university.

  1. Start early: Begin exploring career options and building your professional network as soon as possible. Attend career fairs and networking events and take advantage of any opportunities to gain work experience through internships or part-time jobs. UWE’s weekly newsletter is a must if you want to find great and trustworthy opportunities. Additionally, the enrolment in the management teams of UWE societies is a great add-on to your CV.

  2. Focus on building transferable skills: While it's important to gain experience in your chosen field, it's also essential to develop transferable skills that will be valuable in any job. These might include communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and leadership. Make sure to add these to yout CV and explain how you gained them.

  3. Be open-minded: Be open to different career paths and opportunities, and don't be afraid to explore options outside of your chosen field. You may find that your skills and interests are a good fit for a role or industry that you hadn't considered before. You just never know where an opportunity or a connection can lead you.

  4. Network: Networking is crucial in the UK job market, so make an effort to build relationships with professionals in your field. Join professional organizations, societies, attend events, and consider reaching out to alumni from UWE who are currently working in the UK.

By following these tips, any international student, like me, can increase their chances of success in the UK job market and start building a successful career.
