Please give a brief description of your job and what it involves

I am personally responsible for editorial direction, design, production and distribution of all Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel publications and broad external communications. I also advocate on behalf of the Pan Pacific Hotel Brand with external stakeholders across all communication channels and collaborate with creative agencies to develop the advertising, marketing and promotion plans. My job also involves developing printed materials (Brochures, Factsheets, etc.) and electronic content (e.g. Website, E-brochure, etc.) which propel Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka to prospective clientele or which characterize the ‘what, how and whys’ of the 5-Star Hotel Brand.

I also develop and implement marketing projects from concept to completion in support of events, meetings, workshops or conferences undertaken by Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka; also overlook other external stakeholder or sponsored events in which the hotel participates.

Why do you think you got this job e.g. what skills/knowledge/experience etc.?

I chose to study at the University of Warwick, as the Warwick Business School (WBS) is now ranked among the Top Five UK business school with excellent faculty involved in credible research. I opted for MSc in Marketing and Strategy as this course was a real eye-opener for me, both academically and professionally. It synchronized marketing and strategic management modules remarkably well. The diversity of topics covered throughout my postgraduate year reflected a very well thought out effort to enrich and widen my knowledge overall. In this day and age, students have to be proactive in finding out their unique competitive attributes in themselves, not only to survive but outshine your competitors. I genuinely feel that the skills and knowledge that I gathered from my academic course in the UK and other professional experiences have landed me where I am today.

What makes my UK education even stand out more is the fact that it helped me combine academic expertise with substantial business experience to aid the practical learning in the classroom. I believe, UK's mission of producing world-class, creative leaders who thinks on a global scale, regardless of which industry you belong to, has been very well served if I look at my career now at present.

What key advice would you give to current students who would like to get into a similar job to you?

Almost immediately after I had completed my masters from the UK, I headed back home to Bangladesh and started searching for jobs as anybody would have done. But it’s when I started getting called for interviews when I realized the real value of my UK degree in the corporate world. It’s been more than 3 years now that I have served as the Public Relations Manager first, and now promoted as the Assistant Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka – a brand franchise under the Pan Pacific Hotels & Resorts.

My experience here thus far has been amazing to say the least. More importantly, my academic credentials has helped me in every step of my job as I am able to use all the marketing theories that I had learnt at Warwick to be put into practice in business in a socially responsible manner. What's more interesting is that I had never planned a career in the hotel industry, however, after joining this hospitality sector, I believe that it is undoubtedly one of the most instantaneous job responsibility that one can ever be involved in, as everyday is a new challenge with guest handling and queries. So, if anyone wants to make a career in this field has to be extremely flexible.
