Please give a brief description of your job and what it involves:

I work with higher education institutions to support them with their online marketing and recruitment goals. Our group of websites also supports students in finding information about schools, scholarships, and careers.

What key advice would you give to current students who would like to get into a similar job to you?

Get involved - whether it is extra-curricular activities, sports, music, or volunteer, your involvement in different activities will give you soft skills that are essential to being successful professionally. Everyday is different for me, so knowing how to juggle multiple projects, switch gears quickly, and manage my day are great assets

- Having passion and pride in what you do is a wonderful gift. I am fortunate to have a job that I love, which keeps me positive and creative so that I am constantly pushing my boundaries and skill sets which helps me succeed and continue learning

- Working for a small business can often mean having the ability to change and drive processes and new ideas. Having confidence in your ability and not being afraid to try and fail are great qualities. With the added responsibility can come more pressure, but also tremendous pride when something works successfully based on one of your ideas

Why do you think you got this job e.g. what skills/knowledge/experience etc.:

It was a combination of skills, experience, and passion.

My various work experience opportunities and academic background equipped me with the skills required for my role.
My international experience allows me to bring a broad and varied perspective to my role and clients. Leveraging my experience as a Canadian UK grad has been key for expanding our business and opening an office in the UK where we support UK universities with their recruitment of Canadian students.

Finally, our team is built with a group of individuals who are passionate about higher education. My own interests and values align with this passion for helping to empower individuals through education. Being a part of an organization with like-minded individuals who are passionate about educating the world is a great privilege.

Please feel free to add anything else that you think would be useful?

- Keep an open mind when looking for jobs in Canada. There are many types of businesses - small, start-up, corporate, government, non-profit, etc. - so put yourself out there for various opportunities. While many of my classmates ended up at big corporate organizations (and that was my original intention as well), I never realised how well suited I was to being at a smaller organization until I started my role at EDge

- Network! - network with contacts at similar companies in the UK and try to get the Canadian contacts; join alumni groups and reach out to individuals who might be similar to you; attend industry networking events; use LinkedIn to make connections
- Remember that the first place you work doesn′t have to be the only place that you work! Get your foot in the door somewhere to get some experience under your belt. Build a network with your colleagues, clients, professional contacts, friends, and family. Keep an eye out for opportunities through this network

- If needed, do some volunteer work or unpaid internships to gain Canadian experience and help you build your network and contacts.
