As a percentage of GDP, the Canadian ICT sector is small compared to the US and OECD, but growing faster than the other sectors of the Canadian economy.

According to Industry Canada, Canadian ICT strengths are in: 1) telecom equipment; 2) e‐gaming (3rd largest in the world); and 3) data management, mining and analysis software. In telecom equipment, companies such as RIM and Mitel could benefit from the strong growth in smartphones and enterprise network equipment. In software, Canada could benefit from the strong growth in business analytics.

The exponential growth in data is creating strong opportunities for companies such as IBM Canada (e.g. Cognos, Algorithmics) which is a global leader in business analytics. However, the e‐gaming market is forecasted to grow at a slower annual rate (4.1%) which could slow down growth in the Canadian software industry.

IT services account for almost half of the Canadian ICT industry and are forecast to grow moderately. However, stronger growth in cloud services could benefit some Canadian companies such as CGI and Open Text
